This brief book (Is 366 pages ‘brief’?) was prompted by Leo Tolstoy’s A Calendar of Wisdom, a book of single-page daily quotations.  Before the Internet, he pored over it for over a decade and, ultimately thought it (not Anna Karenina or War and Peace) to be his best work.

With the advantage of the Internet it has taken me a few months to compile my list, with the help of www.azquotes.com/, en.wikiquote.org, and ChatGPT, lots of overlap there.  Most quotations show up in the compiled lists.  I’m grateful to all of them.  Use them to learn more about our speakers.

Initially this was to be A Couple of Daily Quotations.  But, so many are linked together that in the end most days got more than two; usually linked by a theme, but sometimes disconnected.  Tolstoy’s list tended towards moralistic teaching.  There is certainly some of that here.  But, mainly they are intended to be memorable as well as provocative.  You will know, or have seen, many.  I hope that most, ancient and modern, are new to you.  There is some whimsy; Thucydides and Jimi Hendrix share a page.  Having read the daily issue with your morning cup, I’d like to have you recall the day’s theme (if there is one) in the mid-afternoon.

There’s no free lunch. There’s no subscription fee. But, if you find these citations interesting or valuable, I ask you to pay forward. The DONATIONS page has a few of my favs, or call up one of your own & give them a few bucks that you might otherwise not have.  This is your own choice, with no connection to or record on this site. If you chose to do it, please mention DailyQuotes.life so that they have a record of what prompted it.

I cannot understand the people who take literature seriously; but I can love them, and I do. Out of my love I warn them to keep clear of this book.  --  G. K. Chesterton

Everyone likes a good quote - don't forget to share.  --  Abraham Lincoln
